1. What negative SEO is — and what it is not
Negative SEO is the deliberate use of black-hat SEO tactics by a third party with the aim of damaging another site’s search visibility. The term covers everything from spammy link-building campaigns aimed at triggering an algorithmic devaluation to outright hacking, content scraping, fake review campaigns, and impersonation. The unifying feature is intent: the attacker wants the target’s rankings, traffic, or reputation to fall.
What negative SEO is not, in 2026: the default explanation for any unexplained ranking drop. The most common situation in our experience auditing penalised sites is that the site owner suspects negative SEO when the actual cause is an algorithmic update, a content quality issue, or a technical problem. As John Mueller has put it across multiple public statements:
In every case where someone has come to me convinced they are a victim of negative SEO, the underlying issue has turned out to be something else — usually content or technical. — John Mueller, Google.
That does not mean negative SEO is fictional. It means the burden of evidence sits with the diagnosis, not with the attacker. Before treating any traffic drop as a negative SEO attack, the more probable causes have to be ruled out first. The diagnostic sequence is in section 5.

Roughly 70–80% of “negative SEO” cases that come to professional audit are in category 1 (spammy backlink injection) by raw frequency. The other four categories are individually less frequent but more damaging when they succeed, because the technical and procedural defences against them are weaker.
2. How SpamBrain changed the threat model
Understanding what SpamBrain does — and what it does not do — is the foundation of any 2026 negative SEO defence. SpamBrain is Google’s machine-learning-based spam detection system, deployed since 2018 and now operating as the primary line of defence against link manipulation. Two data points anchor the picture.
First, SpamBrain identifies approximately 200 times more spam than the manual review team, according to Google’s own Webspam Report. Second, Google states that SpamBrain helps keep 99% of search results spam-free. Both numbers are Google’s own — but the operational behaviour they describe is consistent with what audit data shows: the link graph is filtered aggressively and continuously.
What SpamBrain does to attack links
SpamBrain operates a real-time link graph analysis. When suspicious links appear in the index — links from PBN-pattern domains, pages with high outbound link density to unrelated targets, sites in topical neighbourhoods of known spam — the system has three available responses:
- Ignore. The link is not counted in PageRank calculations. The target site receives no benefit and no harm. This is the most common outcome.
- Devalue. The link is counted at reduced weight. Used for borderline cases where the source has some legitimate signal but the linking pattern is suspicious.
- Apply negative adjustment. Used in extreme cases where a clear pattern of manipulation cannot be isolated to specific links and the site as a whole is judged to have built its profile manipulatively.
For negative SEO defence, the critical insight is that for an attack to cause damage, it must be sophisticated enough to evade ignore-and-devalue and trigger the third response — or it must trigger a manual action by being severe enough to surface to human reviewers. Both outcomes are possible, but they are uncommon, and they have specific signatures.
The 2026 spam update cycle
Google’s enforcement cadence in 2026 has been notably more aggressive than in previous years. The March 2026 spam update completed its rollout in under 20 hours — compared to the 2-4 week rollouts of earlier spam updates — which Google has attributed to expanded SpamBrain processing capacity. Two operational implications follow:
- Attacks that would have taken months to be devalued in 2022 are now devalued in days. The window during which a successful attack can cause damage is correspondingly shorter.
- The same speed cuts both ways. Sites that have been quietly accumulating problematic links of their own are also being detected and devalued faster. Some of what is reported as negative SEO is actually retroactive enforcement against tactics the site itself used.

3. The four attack signatures that still cause damage in 2026
In a portfolio of audited sites that have suffered measurable harm from a third-party link attack — the genuine cases, not the misdiagnoses — the attacks fall into four signatures. Recognising these is half the defence; the other half is the monitoring system in section 4.
Signature 1: Hostile anchor text targeting
The attacker builds inbound links with anchor text designed to either (a) over-optimise the target’s profile for a specific commercial keyword and trigger an algorithmic anchor-text penalty, or (b) embed gambling, pharma, or adult anchors to force topical drift in the target’s perceived subject.
Signature in the data: a sudden anchor text distribution where exact-match commercial or off-topic anchors jump from <5% to >25% of new links inside two to four weeks. The attack is most effective against sites with low-volume natural link profiles where a relatively small injection can swing the percentages.
Defence: anchor text distribution monitoring weekly. If the percentage of new links with exact-match commercial, gambling, pharma, or adult anchors exceeds the historical baseline by 3x in any seven-day window, treat as a possible attack and proceed to investigation.
Signature 2: Topically anomalous link clusters
The attacker builds links from a tightly-clustered set of low-quality domains in a specific topical neighbourhood — usually adult, gambling, pharma, or foreign-language spam clusters — pointing at the target site. The attack works on the link graph relationship Google uses to evaluate topical relevance: links from manifestly off-topic spam clusters can be treated by the system as a signal of association rather than as innocuous noise.
Signature in the data: a sudden cluster of new referring domains where the topical category is uniform, foreign, and unrelated to the target’s niche. Twenty new “casino” domains in a single week pointing at a B2B SaaS site is the textbook pattern.
Defence: referring domain category monitoring. Both Ahrefs and Semrush categorise referring domains automatically; weekly review of the new referring domains report with a topical filter is the standard early-warning process.
Signature 3: Velocity spike attacks
The attacker generates a high-volume burst of new inbound links — hundreds to thousands of low-quality links in days. The intent is to trip the velocity-anomaly detection in Google’s systems and have the target’s profile flagged as manipulative.
Signature in the data: link velocity (new referring domains per week) spikes 5–10x above the rolling baseline with no corresponding press coverage, viral content, or campaign that would explain the increase.
Defence: velocity baselining. Calculate a rolling four-week baseline of new referring domains per week; alert on any week that exceeds 3x baseline. The threshold is deliberately conservative — genuine viral spikes happen and the false positive cost is just an investigation, not a remediation.
Signature 4: Sophisticated contextual link injection
The most damaging attack pattern, and the rarest. The attacker places links inside contextually-credible content on legitimate-looking domains — typically expired authority domains the attacker has acquired and operates as a stealth PBN, or paid-but-undisclosed placements on real publications — using anchor text and surrounding text designed to look editorially natural.
This pattern is the one that does not fit the usual signatures. The links pass cursory inspection, the linking domains have plausible-looking metrics, and the anchor distribution looks reasonable in isolation. Detection requires a deeper read of the link profile than the automated tools provide.
Signature in the data: new links from mid-DR domains where (a) the domain’s content history shows discontinuity (long dormancy followed by sudden publishing activity), (b) the linking page exists outside the natural publishing pattern of the rest of the site, (c) the link is to a commercial money page rather than to a contextually-relevant article, and (d) the linking site’s own backlink profile shows low-quality patterns.
Defence: monthly hand-review of the top 20 new referring domains. The four checks above take 5 minutes per domain and surface this signature reliably. Automation flags can supplement but should not replace the manual review for sites where the attack risk is high.
All four signatures share a common diagnostic discipline: they require a baseline. A site that does not know its normal weekly link velocity, normal anchor distribution, normal referring domain composition, and normal new-domain quality cannot detect anomalies. 4. The four-part weekly monitoring system
Detection is the determinant of damage. An attack caught in week one is annoying; an attack caught in week eight after rankings have already started moving is a recovery project. The monitoring system below takes 20–30 minutes per week and runs on tools every link-aware site already pays for.

The escalated monitoring set
Sites that face elevated negative SEO risk — high-revenue commercial sites, sites in adversarial niches (legal, finance, gambling, supplements), or sites that have previously been attacked — should run an expanded monitoring set:
- Daily traffic and ranking monitoring on the top 20 commercial keywords. A coordinated attack often produces measurable ranking effects within 48–72 hours, before backlink data fully populates in third-party tools.
- Daily Google alert on the brand name and any common misspellings. Catches scraped content, impersonation sites, and reputation campaigns within hours of publication.
- Weekly check of Google Search Console’s URL inspection for any sudden de-indexing of major pages. Catches fake DMCA takedowns and security-issue triggers.
- Monthly Google Business Profile review monitoring for review-bombing patterns. The relevant signal is volume of one-star reviews in a 7-day window without operational change.
- Monthly server-log review for unusual crawl patterns, suspicious user agents, or content-scraping bots.
5. The diagnostic sequence when something looks wrong
The most common error in negative SEO defence is reaching for the disavow file before establishing what actually caused the observed problem. Before any defensive action, run the diagnostic in order. Each step rules out a more probable cause.
- Check the Manual Actions report. If a manual action exists, the cause is identified. Recovery follows the manual action recovery process; negative SEO defence is irrelevant at this stage.
- Check the Security Issues report. If a security issue exists, the site is hacked. Remediate the hack first; link-related concerns are downstream.
- Check the timing of the drop against Google’s update history. If the drop coincides within 1–3 days of a confirmed core update or spam update, the cause is most likely algorithmic. Negative SEO would not normally produce a drop tightly synchronised with Google’s update calendar.
- Check Google Search Console’s Page indexing report for sudden de-indexing. If pages have been de-indexed without other signals, suspect a fake DMCA takedown or a technical issue (noindex tag, robots.txt change, server errors).
- Check the four monitoring metrics from section 4. If all four are within normal range, the cause is not a link attack. Pivot the investigation to content, technical, or competitive factors.
- If the four metrics show genuine anomalies, identify the specific signature (hostile anchors, topical anomaly, velocity spike, contextual injection). Different signatures require different responses.
Skipping any of the first four steps leads to misdiagnosis in the majority of cases. A traffic drop that coincides with a core update is not a negative SEO event regardless of what is happening in the link profile, and treating it as one wastes the recovery window for the actual cause.
6. The defensive response sequence
Once a genuine attack is confirmed via the diagnostic, the response depends on the signature and on the site’s current state. The defensive options, in order of preference:
Option A: Wait and monitor (default for most attacks)
For attack signatures 1, 2, and 3 (hostile anchors, topical anomalies, velocity spikes) — which represent the majority of negative SEO attacks — the default response is informed inaction. SpamBrain processes the link graph in real time. The expected outcome for the great majority of these attacks is that Google ignores or devalues the new links within days, with no human intervention required.
During the wait period (typically 1–4 weeks), continue monitoring the four metrics and watch for any actual ranking impact. If rankings are stable and the SpamBrain processing trajectory is visible (in Ahrefs or Semrush, attack links appear in the profile and then visibly become inactive), no further action is needed.
This is also the response Google’s own guidance recommends. John Mueller’s repeated public position is that the disavow tool exists primarily for sites with manual actions, not for routine maintenance against suspicious-looking links. The 2026 Editorial.link survey of 518 SEO experts found that only 39.0% of practitioners still actively use the disavow tool — a figure that has fallen consistently as confidence in SpamBrain’s automatic handling has grown.
Option B: Proactive disavow (specific situations only)
Disavow is the right tool in three specific situations:
- A manual action for unnatural links has been issued. Disavow is required as part of the reconsideration request process.
- The attack is at a scale that genuinely concerns Google’s webspam team’s threshold for manual review — typically thousands of new spam links from a single attack source within a short window. In this case, proactive disavow demonstrates good faith should the attack escalate to manual review.
- Rankings have measurably moved in line with the attack timing, and the four monitoring signatures show a clear pattern. In this case, disavow plus a complete audit is justified — but only after the diagnostic in section 5 has ruled out other causes.
In all other situations, disavowing is at best neutral and at worst harmful. Over-disavowing legitimate links — including borderline cases that the auditor incorrectly classifies as suspect — strips authority from a site without any compensating benefit. The discipline is to disavow only what the audit has clearly classified as policy-violating, and to leave the rest of the profile untouched.

Option C: Removal outreach (high-value attacks only)
For the small subset of attacks where the attacking links are concentrated on a manageable number of high-impact source domains, contacting the linking sites and requesting removal can be productive. The cost-benefit calculation:
- If the attack involves <50 source domains and the contact information is available, removal outreach is worth a single attempt per domain.
- If the attack involves hundreds or thousands of low-quality source domains, removal outreach is impractical. The standard professional approach is to skip directly to disavow if the attack signature warrants any action.
- If the attack is contextual link injection on legitimate sites (signature 4), removal outreach is essential — the linking sites are typically real publications that will remove a clearly-identified manipulative link if asked.
Option D: Direct escalation to Google (rare cases)
Google’s spam report form (formerly the webspam report) accepts public submissions of spam patterns. For a coordinated, sustained negative SEO attack — particularly one involving large-scale paid link networks — submitting a detailed spam report can be productive. The submission does not directly help the targeted site, but it gives the webspam team data on the attacker’s network. In documented cases, this has led to enforcement action against the network, which removes the attack source.
7. The disavow decision in 2026
The disavow tool occupies a contested place in modern SEO. Google’s own guidance has been progressively more cautious about it; major SEO voices now publicly recommend against using it in most situations; and the 2026 survey data shows usage at <40% of practitioners. The position this guide takes is calibrated to the current consensus and to the tool’s actual operational utility.
What Google currently says
Google’s official documentation describes the disavow tool as an “advanced feature” that “should only be used with caution”. The two situations Google explicitly recommends it for:
You have a considerable number of spammy, artificial, or low-quality links pointing to your site, AND the links have caused a manual action, or likely will cause a manual action, on your site. — Google Search Console Help: Disavow links to your site.
Both conditions are required. A profile that contains some low-quality links but is not under manual action and is not at imminent risk of one does not meet Google’s bar for disavow use.
What John Mueller has consistently said
Across multiple public statements over 2024 and 2025, John Mueller has made the case clearly and repeatedly:
The disavow tool is not something that you need to do on a regular basis. It’s not a part of normal site maintenance. I would really only use that if you have a manual spam action. — John Mueller, Google.
Mueller has also publicly criticised SEO companies that sell disavow services as a routine product, characterising the practice as “making things up” to monetise client anxiety. The disavow tool’s enduring presence in routine SEO workflows is in large part a marketing artefact rather than an operational necessity.
The pragmatic 2026 disavow framework
Combining Google’s guidance, Mueller’s commentary, and the operational reality of running monitored sites at scale, the framework below covers the situations where disavow is and is not the right tool:

8. Beyond links: the other negative SEO categories
The four categories outside spammy backlink injection are individually less common but each requires a different defensive playbook. Coverage is condensed; each is a topic in its own right.
Content scraping and duplication
Detection: monthly Copyscape or Originality.AI scan against the top 20 organic-traffic pages. Use Google’s “site:” and exact-phrase searches as a free supplement. Genuine scraping at scale produces multiple republished copies; isolated single-copy scraping is rarely worth pursuing.
Response: file a DMCA takedown notice with the offending site’s host first; Google’s removal request as a follow-up. Maintaining clear authorship signals (proper H1, byline, schema markup, and a publish date significantly earlier than the scraper’s republication) helps prevent the original from being mis-identified as the duplicate.
Fake DMCA takedowns
Detection: a sudden de-indexing of pages that should be indexed, often visible in the Google Search Console Page Indexing report, sometimes accompanied by an emailed DMCA notice from Google. Reviewing the Lumen Database (chillingeffects) for DMCA notices filed against the domain confirms this category.
Response: file a DMCA counter-notification through the platform that processed the original takedown. Counter-notifications restore content within 10–14 business days if the original notice cannot be substantiated. Document the original publication date and authorship clearly. In genuine bad-faith cases, legal action against the original filer is available under DMCA misrepresentation provisions.
Fake review and reputation attacks
Detection: review platform monitoring (Google Business Profile, Trustpilot, sector-specific platforms) on a monthly basis. The relevant signal is a volume of negative reviews disproportionate to the change in customer activity, often clustered in a 3–7 day window.
Response: report each fake review through the platform’s review-flagging mechanism with evidence (no transaction record, fake reviewer profile, generic content, IP analysis if available). Trustpilot and Google Business Profile both have escalation paths for coordinated inauthentic review campaigns. The remediation rate for clearly-evidenced fake review reports is typically 60–80% on Google Business Profile.
Site-level attacks
Detection: Google Search Console Security Issues report; daily uptime monitoring; weekly server log review for unusual traffic patterns. Modern WAFs (Cloudflare, Sucuri) catch most automated attacks at the perimeter and provide alerting.
Response: depends on the specific attack. Hacking incidents require full security remediation (patching, password rotation, malicious-content removal, hash verification) before Google’s security flag will lift. DDoS attacks are absorbed by CDN/WAF infrastructure. The defensive posture for these is preventive — proper security hygiene matters more than reactive response.
9. Recovery timelines and the wrong response trap
When an attack does cause measurable damage — which, to repeat, is uncommon — the recovery timelines vary by signature. The numbers below are the observed recovery profiles from documented cases:

The wrong response trap
Most documented cases of failed recovery from suspected negative SEO trace to the same error: applying the response playbook for one category to a problem in a different category. The four most common variants:
- Disavowing aggressively after a core update, on the assumption that the ranking drop must be a link-related attack. The actual cause was content-related, the disavow file removes legitimate authority, and the site is now both content-deficient and link-deficient.
- Treating a manual action as an algorithmic issue, by trying to clean up content quality without submitting a reconsideration request. The manual action remains in place indefinitely.
- Treating an algorithmic issue as a manual action, by repeatedly submitting reconsideration requests when no manual action exists. The reconsideration requests are rejected without informative feedback because there is nothing to reconsider.
- Treating a fake DMCA takedown as a search-quality issue, by overhauling the affected pages instead of filing a counter-notification. The counter-notification window can elapse, making restoration much harder.
The diagnostic sequence in section 5 exists specifically to prevent these failure modes. The discipline of running the diagnostic before any defensive action is the single most consequential improvement most sites can make to their negative SEO posture.
10. Building a profile that is hard to attack
The most resistant site to negative SEO is the one whose link profile is large enough, diverse enough, and well-earned enough that an attack of any practical scale cannot meaningfully shift its statistical signature. Profile robustness is itself a defence.
- Volume. A site with 5,000 referring domains is much harder to attack than one with 200. The same number of attacking links represents a smaller percentage shift in every metric — anchor distribution, velocity, topical composition. Attacks that would move the needle on a small site fail to register on a large one.
- Diversity. A profile that is concentrated in a single tactic (e.g., 80% from guest posts) is more brittle than one spread across digital PR, original research, partnerships, broken link building, resource pages, and editorial coverage. Diversified profiles tolerate noise better.
- Topical coherence. A site whose existing profile is tightly clustered in its actual subject area has stronger signals against off-topic injection. The natural baseline already pushes back.
- Brand strength. Sites with strong unlinked brand mention activity, consistent search demand for the brand name, and broad recognition are evaluated more conservatively by Google’s systems. The brand signal acts as a circuit breaker against link-based misclassification.
